SOUTHBURY - There is a new way to learn tennis skills for beginners or former players who would like to get back into the game.

Southbury resident Val Stoiana, a certified tennis professional, former touring pro and Romanian Davis Cup team member, will offer Tennis Made Simple beginning Monday, April 4, at Dolce Heritage Tennis Club.

"With a few simple basics, you can be out enjoying the game and improving your health at the same time," said Mr. Stoiana.

Tennis offers fun and socialization along with exercise. Cleveland Clinic Heart Center research shows that three hours of moderate aerobic exercise every week can cut the risk of developing heart disease by 50 percent and that a 135-pound woman playing an hour of tennis can burn 330 calories during doubles and 420 calories during singles.

"Fitness is just one of the many benefits tennis has to offer," said Val Stoiana. "Not only do you build muscle strength and stamina, but you also improve balance, mental acuity and hand-eye coordination, all while you're socializing with old friends or making new ones."

The workshop meets twice a week for five weeks, and participants can choose a combination of days and times: Mondays thru Fridays 10 to 11 a.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. Saturdays 11 a.m. to noon.

The cost for the five-week program, which is open to the public, is $70.

Those seeking additional information may call Mr. Stoiana at 203-232-5337.

Tennis Classes Offered

SOUTHBURY- The popular Tennis Made Simple way of teaming or perfecting existing tennis skills is ideal for former players, beginners or anyone looking to get in shape.

The program will begin Wednesday, September 7, at Dolce Heritage Tennis Club, and is taught by Southbury resident Val Stoiana, a certified tennis professional, former touring pro and Romanian Davis Cup team member.

"With a few simple basics, you can be out enjoying the game and improving your health at the same time," said Mr. Stoiana.

According to Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, research shows that three hours of moderate aerobic exercise every week can cut the risk of developing heart disease by 50 percent.

If that isn't enough of an incentive, consider the fact that a 135-pound woman playing an hour of tennis can burn 330 calories during doubles and 420 calories during singles.

Everyone wants to be physically fit and healthy, but most people don't want to spend the time, energy and sweat it takes to achieve it.

Most fitness experts agree, this lack of commitment stems from one universal problem, boredom.

If you don't like what you're doing, you won't keep doing it. However, according to Mr. Stoiana, Tennis Made Simple is so much fun, you don't know it's good for you.

The program meets twice a week for five weeks, and participants can choose their combination of days and times.

The classes meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. any weekday; from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday; and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The cost for this five-week program (10 lessons), which is open to the public, is $100.

Those seeking additional information about the Tennis Made Simple program may call Mr. Stoiana at 203-232-5337 or sign up online at www.tennismadesimple.com.
